Vicky Hurst, the 21-year-old Solheim Cup rookie and captain’s pick, earned Captain Rosie Jones’ attention with a final-round 67 in the Safeway Classic to finish T5. Hurst talks about the Solheim Cup being a goal of hers and how she's most excited to wear the red, white, and blue.
Did you enter the season with The Solheim Cup as a goal?
Hurst: Making The U.S. Solheim Cup Team was always a goal. I wasn't thinking about it over every shot I hit but I knew that good play would lead to a good chance of making the team.
How often did you think about those Solheim Cup points this years?
Hurst: I didn't look at the Solheim points much actually but it was kind of hard to not pay a little attention. I just did my best to focus on each tournament at the time.
As the time to pick the team go closer how nervous were you?
Hurst: I wasn't nervous at all. I knew that Rosie would pick the two very best picks for her team whether that was me or not.
What was running through your head when you found out you were a captain’s pick?
Hurst: I was very excited. Rosie told me after I finished my final round at the Safeway Classic. It felt awesome and it didn't quite hit me until all 12 of us got together as a team in the locker room. That's when it really hit me.
Has it really sunk in yet that you’ll be playing in Ireland for the 2011 U.S. Solheim Cup Team?
Hurst: It has but I don't think I really know exactly what I'm in for. All I know is that it's going to be a crazy amount of fun and great golf.
What about the Solheim Cup are you most excited about?
Hurst: Wearing red, white and blue.
