Brittany Lang seems to thrive on golf's biggest stages. Fresh off her victory on the 2016 U.S. Women's Open, the 30-year old Texan is poised to earn a fifth consecutive selection to represent her country in the Solheim Cup.
If she secures a spot on Team USA, Lang's week in West Des Moines will almost certainly be a family affair. Her brother Luke, an All-Conference golfer who played for Arkansas Tech University, is her caddie. Husband Kevin Spann, who proposed to Lang on the final green at the 2013 North Texas Shootout, follows her from hole to hole during most tournaments. So, too will a large contingent of fans from Lang's hometown of McKinney, Texas.
With 180 points, Lang currently ranks fourth in the 2017 Solheim Cup points standing trailing only Lexi Thompson, Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller. Her ranking reflects her first win in a major, a three-hole playoff victory over Sweden's Anna Nordqvist at the U.S. Women's Open July 9, and four other top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour this season.
U.S. Women's Open Rematch?
By continuing to play consistent golf, Lang potentially will face off again with Nordqvist at the 2017 Solheim Cup. In fact, both Lang and Nordqvist were members of the 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 Solheim Cup teams – for USA and Europe respectively. The experiences were so meaningful that Lang has an entire wall in her Texas home decked out with flags from each of her Solheim Cup tournaments.
"It's a special deal to be a part of. It's definitely the coolest accomplishment to be on those teams with those great players," Lang said.
Described by Brittany Lincicome as "the best stand-up comedian" on the 2015 team, there is a good chance Lang's possible 2017 Solheim Cup teammates will include members of her wedding party. Lincicome served as her maid of honor, Paula Creamer and Angela Stafford were bridesmaids.
Will Lang make it five Solheim Cups in a row? There's a lot of golf to be played before we know. Until then, get your tickets to the 2017 Solheim Cup and see best LPGA golfers from both sides of the pond.
