Sörenstam to Compete in First Regular Season LPGA Tour Event Since 2021 Gainbridge LPGA
MIDLAND, Mich. – June 28, 2022 – Tournament officials announced today that LPGA legend Annika Sörenstam will be teaming up with Madelene Sagström for the 2022 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. They will join a field of 72 two-woman teams competing for a $2.5 million purse at Midland Country Club from July 10 – 16, 2022. This will be Sörenstam’s first LPGA Tour regular season competitive start since the 2021 Gainbridge LPGA. Most recently, Annika competed in the USGA’s 2022 US Women’s Open.
“The Dow GLBI continues to attract the biggest names on the LPGA Tour,” said Dow GLBI Executive Director Chris Chandler. “Having Annika and Madelene a part of our field gives fans the opportunity to watch a golf legend play alongside one of the most exciting young players in the game, while experiencing one of the most unique events on the Tour.”
Sörenstam has recorded more than 90 worldwide professional wins, 72 on the LPGA Tour including 10 majors. She earned a record eight player of the year awards and was the first and only woman to shoot 59 in competition. The World Golf Hall of Fame and LPGA Hall of Fame member is the only LPGA player to ever win the Money List, Player of the Year and Vare Trophy in the same year for five different seasons. Her illustrious career also included an appearance at the PGA TOUR’s Bank of America Colonial. This was the first time a woman had played a PGA TOUR event since LPGA Founder, Babe Zaharias qualified for the Los Angeles Open in 1947. An eight-time European Solheim Cup team member, Sörenstam also captained the European Solheim Cup in 2017, where Sagstrom was a Captain’s Selection.
“I’m super excited to tee it up alongside my friend, Madelene for the Dow GLBI,” Sörenstam said. “She’s got a positive attitude and I’ve enjoyed practicing and spending time with her. I’ve heard great things about this tournament from my friends on the LPGA Tour. Team events are always fun and I’m looking forward to the experience.”
In 2021, Sagström made her second Solheim Cup appearance after being selected by European Solheim Cup Team Captain Catriona Matthew. Team Europe went onto capture their second Solheim Cup win on U.S. soil after defeating the U.S. 15-13. An LPGA Tour winner at the 2020 Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio, Sagström also represented her home country of Sweden at the Tokyo Olympics.
“Annika is one of the greatest Solheim Cup players in history, and teaming up with her for the Dow GLBI will be a thrill of a lifetime,” said Sagström. “We have begun practicing at home in Orlando, and we can’t wait to tee-it-up in Midland in July.”
