STROM LEADS AFTER 33 HOUR FIRST ROUND
After a long weather delay on Thursday, first round action of the French Lick Charity Classic was suspended until Friday morning. Fog delayed Friday’s start by another hour. Finally, almost 34 hours later, first round play in French Lick, Indiana has concluded.
Linnea Strom sat alone at the top of the leaderboard after shooting 6-under. The Swede finished her back nine on Friday morning, on which she went bogey-free. Over the two-day first round, Strom carded seven birdies.
“I played really well yesterday,” said Strom. “So I had a little bit of momentum going into today. I started the day with a putt on No. 14, and I holed it for birdie. I think that was a good feeling for the day.”
Without factoring in weather, French Lick Resort’s Pete Dye course is a difficult one. The narrow fairways and bunkers are a test to the player’s skills and mental game. The challenge doesn’t bother Strom, however.
“I prefer to play tougher courses,” said Strom. “This course is one of those where you can never relax.”
One stroke behind Strom, in solo second, was Hyo Joon Jang. Jang was 5-under before heading back out to play another 18.
Jang carded six birdies on the day and went bogey-free on the course’s front nine, her back nine. To stay positive on a long day, she makes sure she listens to her body and her yardage book.
“It’s like a marathon,” said Joon. “It’s important to continue eating and keeping hydrated.”
Rounding out the top 5 were two players tied for third and another two tied for fifth. Daniela Darquea and Gabriella Then shared third place at 4-under, while Katelyn Sisk and Jessica Welch shared fifth at 3-under.
