Friday Morning Foursomes

Albane Valenzuela opened the first round of matches by nearly holing out for eagle, hitting the pin on her approach shot and settling a few feet from the cup.

Friday Afternoon Four-Ball

Rose Zhang found herself off the left side of the third hole during the Friday afternoon matches. Just in the fringe, she pulled out her putter and sank the 50-foot lag putt to tie the match.

Nelly Korda was paired with Megan Khang for Friday afternoon matches, and the duo faced Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire. Five up through 11 holes, Korda pulled out a 5-iron for a second shot on the par-5 12th hole. Her shot hit the front of the green and rolled out, stopping less than two feet from the hole. They ultimately defeated Hall and Maguire 6 and 4.

Madelene Sagstrom and teammate Anna Nordqvist were four up through 11 holes and looking to take a win over Alison Lee and Lexi Thompson. Sagstrom sat on the back edge of the 12th green with the team’s third shot. She drained the long eagle putt to go 5 up through 12. They only needed one more hole to win the match 6 and 5.

Andrea Lee had a long approach on the 14th hole that hit short of the green. It kicked toward the pin and rolled over the left edge of the hole, stopping less than a foot away. Her partner, Rose Zhang, went on to make the eagle putt, ending the match with the U.S. duo defeating Europe’s Linn Grant and Charley Hull 5 and 4.

Saturday Morning Foursomes

Also on the 14th hole, U.S. Team member Allisen Corpuz hit her approach shot thin, but got lucky with the outcome. The ball found the green despite the mishit, rolling up the right side along the fringe. Her partner, Nelly Korda, sank an impressive eagle putt to take the team 1 up. They won the match 1 up over Europe’s Emily Pedersen and Carlota Ciganda.

On the 16th hole, U.S. Team member Ally Ewing used her flat stick for a lag putt, leaving nothing to be desired. She sent a birdie putt from more than 40 feet out and gave the crowd one of the best celebrations of the Saturday morning foursomes.

Saturday Afternoon Four-Ball

A bet between U.S. players and caddies came to life on the second hole of the Saturday afternoon matches when Alison Lee holed out on the second hole. The ball landed just past the hole and spun back into the cup for an eagle to go 1 up. Her caddie had bet her on that tee box that he would take his shirt off if she holed out during the round. She did not waste any time, and both caddies for the group delivered on their promise.

Andrea Lee also wasted no time on Saturday afternoon. She sank an eagle putt on the opening hole, a successful attempt from over 30 feet that set the tone for the entire match. Her and teammate Rose Zhang defeated Europe’s Linn Grant and Celine Boutier 6 and 4.

Lexi Thompson found herself in an uncomfortable lie just off the sixth green. With her feet hanging over the edge of the greenside bunker, she got the wedge up and chipped in to give her team a birdie.

Andrea Lee kept the theatrics going throughout the round. On the 13th hole, she found herself in the bunker, but that proved to be no issue. Her bunker shot took two hops on the green and found the bottom of the cup. Her and Zhang went 5 up and finished their match on the following hole.

Sunday Singles Matches

After halving the first hole against Anna Nordqvist, Allisen Corpuz pulled out the big guns on the second hole. Another approach shot that didn’t start out as intended pulled toward the left side of the green. Her ball kicked off the fringe and rolled to 2 feet from the hole. She made the birdie putt to go 1 up and led for the remainder of the match, winning 4 and 3.

This year’s European captain, Anna Nordqvist, had one of the best shots of the day on the fifth hole. Her second approach shot on the par-5 landed close to the pin, took a few hops, and dropped into the cup for an eagle.

Sarah Schmelzel was off the back of the 10th green, looking to chip and get an up-and-down par. But she didn’t have to even think about putting after her chip shot found the hole.

Two holes later, Schmelzel had a 40-fooe eagle putt. Her putt rolled in with perfect speed, carding an eagle to claim the hole and tie the match.

Lilia Vu and Albane Valenzuela took their Sunday match all the way to the 18th hole. Valenzuela was 1 up, but Vu had a chance to tie the match with a win on the hole. Her approach shot into the green stopped 1 foot from the cup. Valenzuela made par, and Vu tapped in for birdie to halve the match, securing the 14.5 points needed for the U.S. Team to win the 2024 Solheim Cup title.
