ORLANDO, Fla – Danielle Kang and Madelene Sagstrom were rookies on their respective teams at the Solheim Cup in Des Moines in 2017. Kang earned three points for her team and anchored the Sunday singles matches en route to an overwhelming defeat by the Americans 16 ½ - 11 ½. Sagstrom, a captain’s pick, struggled in her debut, earning a single point for Team Europe. While their experiences were quite different, what they took away from the matches was the same – there’s no way they’re missing the re-match at Gleneagles.
“When I played in Des Moines I’m pretty sure I couldn’t see the grass because it was just covered in red,” Kang joked about the number of American fans. “I’m sure the whole of Europe will be there doing that Ole Ole song and I’ll hear it and see it, but I’m sure there’ll be a lot of American fans that come out that will be chanting U-S-A as well. It’ll be great.”
“It's always an honor to represent Europe, but playing on European soil would be absolutely amazing,” Sagstrom said. “It’s definitely a massive goal of mind [to make the team] and I’m going to work hard to give myself the chance to get there.”
Monday, Kang and Sagstrom took part in a promotional event for the Solheim Cup at TopGolf Orlando. The pair stood on either side of a round table covered in the official tartan for the Solheim Cup, which was also unveiled Monday, along with the trophy. Both players received a scarf with the new tartan.
TopGolf couldn’t have been a more perfect venue for these two to tease the September matches. The duo squared off, aiming for targets, and the highest point-earner declared the winner. Kang came out on top with 108 points to Sagstrom’s 71 points.
The 2019 Solheim Cup matches get underway at in Scotland at Gleneagles on September 11th.
