Angela Stanford’s streak of 98 majors played could have come to an end this past week at The Chevron Championship. After missing the cut at The Club at Carlton Woods, the 44-year-old played in a U.S. Women’s Open qualifier on April 23 at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto, Calif., before competing at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro this week.
Ultimately, Stanford failed to qualify for the 79th edition of the championship, sharing the news on her social media on April 24.
“Unfortunately, I did not qualify for the U.S. Open today,” said Stanford in a message that was posted to both her X and Instagram channels. “I thought I would say thank you. While a handful of people did not believe the road to 100 was a worthy pursuit, I feel like most did. Thank you to the LPGA media, golf media, the fans, Chevron, and I believe KPMG and PGA of America would have embraced 100.”
She went on to say, “I could still qualify by winning an event before the Open. Thankfully, Nelly isn’t in the field this week. On that note, huge congratulations to Nelly. This run has been so much fun to watch! I’m so happy for Nelly and everyone around her!”
Stanford continued, thanking her trainer, coach and caddie for their continued support in her pursuit of 100 consecutive majors and sharing that her late mother, Nan, would have been proud of her efforts to achieve her goal.
“A friend of mine sent me a text saying my mom would have been proud,” said the 2018 Amundi Evian Championship winner. “She would have. She taught me to go for the tough things in life. She loved the majors. They have always been the toughest.”
The Texan could still play her way into the field at Lancaster Country Club by winning an event or moving up substantially in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings to the top 75.
But if the improbable doesn’t happen, Stanford has decided that this will indeed be her final year competing on the LPGA Tour, saying that she’ll have a new goal in mind as she rides off into the sunset at the conclusion of this year.
“I’ve been told I should smile more on the course,” said Stanford in her post. “I’m going to try that the rest of the year. Play some of my favorites and call it a career on this Tour.”
